Frequently Asked Questions
Will you be selecting interns for the dietetic internship only program in the fall of 2020?
Yes, applicants who are interested in applying to our dietetic internship only (without the MS degree), can apply in the fall of 2020, to start the internship in January 2021.
When is the next MS/DI selection?
We will be selecting interns for our MS/DI program in the spring of 2021.
Do I need to live in the Fresno Area for the MS/DI program?
The master's degree is completely online. For the first year-and-a-half of the MS/DI program, interns can live anywhere while completing their master's degree courses online. During the final year of the program, interns need to live in/near the Fresno Area, to be able to drive to their rotation sites.
When does the dietetic internship only program begin and end?
The dietetic internship begins the first full week in January, and ends the first week in November.
How many interns does your program take?
Our program has 6 intern positions available.
Can I work if I am enrolled in the Central Valley WIC Dietetic Internship?
Yes, you can. Please note that unlike other WIC internships, our program does not provide employment in WIC for our dietetic interns.
How many hours a week does the internship require of interns?
Classes are held each Monday morning, usually between 9 AM and 12 PM.
Interns attend their rotations Tuesday through Friday, during most weeks of the internship. For three Community Nutrition rotations, WIC Education and Leadership, Stone Soup and Head Start, the rotations are scheduled Tuesday through Thursday. Rotation hours are typically 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Please note that the hours at each rotation can vary, depending on preceptor needs.
Also, additional time is required outside of supervised practice and classes to complete homework, assignments and to attend professional meetings. The rotation sites may require that the intern be available in the evenings, on holidays and on week-ends.
Where are the internship rotation sites located?
About half of our rotation sites are located in the Fresno Area. The other half of our rotation sites are located 20 - 100 miles away from the Fresno. This means that interns have to drive anywhere from 20 - 100 miles, one-way, for some of their rotations, or find lodging at the most distant rotation sites (Modesto and Porterville). The interns are given a complete rotation schedule at the beginning of the year, in January, so they know well ahead of time when their most distant rotations will take place.
Do you offer any stipends or scholarships?
We do not offer stipends. California WIC employees selected for a position in the internship are eligible to apply for the California Nutrition Corps Scholarships through the California WIC Association (www.calwic.org). Please see our "Related Links" page for links to scholarship information.
If I am selected for your program, what kind of documentation do I need to submit at the beginning of the program?
All selected interns are required to submit the following documents on the first day of orientation: 1) a physical examination form completed by a medical doctor, 2) professional liability insurance, 3) documented proof of specific, required immunizations, 4) a valid driver's license, and 5) automobile insurance. (More information on these required documents is provided upon acceptance into the internship program, at least 1 month prior to the start of orientation.)
Also, please note that our interns are required to complete several lengthy assignments prior to the start of the internship program. These assignments usually include a review of nutrition therapy topics, medical terminology, providing quality health care, and writing skills. Past interns have estimated that these assignments can take up to 60 hours to complete.
